Engagement, honeymoon, anniversary, or no occasion at all. My favourite sessions to shoot — and the ones where the difference between a good photographer and a great one shows up fastest.
Why couples sessions work here
Usually one of you is nervous. That is the actual job.
Almost every couple arrives with a split: one person is excited, the other has decided in advance that they are bad at this. My whole approach is built around that second person. I show you frames on the back of the camera as I shoot so you can see what you actually look like, and confidence tends to follow within about five minutes.
I will offer prompts and posing if you want them, and I will drop anything you do not. If kissing photos are not your thing, say so at the start and I move on without making it a moment. A photograph of someone doing something they did not want to do looks exactly like that.
The wide shot
You came all this way. The island should be in the photo.
I came up shooting landscapes on a GoPro, and it shaped how I frame people. If you flew to Maui for this, the frames should say Maui — not a tight crop that could have been taken in a park at home.
So every session gets a range: the wide establishing frame with the coastline behind you, the mid-shot, and the close, quiet ones. Different lenses, deliberately, across the same forty-five minutes.

Before you book a couples session
It is the normal starting point, not the exception. I show you frames on the back of the camera as I shoot so you can see what you actually look like, and most people relax inside the first five minutes. I will also drop anything you do not want. Say no to kissing photos at the start and I move on without making it a moment.
Forty-five minutes is the one most couples book and the one I would recommend. Thirty is enough for one location and one look. An hour gives you a second and third backdrop and room for an outfit change.
Yes. A planned engagement session and a surprise proposal are different jobs though. If she does not know it is happening, book through the proposal page, because that includes scouting, day-of coordination and same-day sneak peeks.
